A place of warmth, wonder, and learning in the heart of East Gippsland
Wild Cherry School was born from a vision shared by a group of East Gippsland families who believed in a different kind of education — one that honours childhood, celebrates creativity, and nurtures the whole child.
In 2013, that vision became reality when we opened our doors in a beautiful heritage-listed former hospital on McKean Street, Bairnsdale. The grand Victorian brick building, with its Gothic-revival arched windows and soaring ceilings, provides a truly special environment for children to learn and grow.
Today, Wild Cherry serves families from across East Gippsland — from Playgroup through to Class 6 — offering Waldorf/Steiner education under the Australian Steiner Curriculum Framework. Our established gardens, natural play spaces, and intimate community make this a place where children are truly known and valued.

Everything we do is rooted in the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner and a deep respect for childhood.
“Receive the children in reverence, educate them with love, let them go forth in freedom.”
We educate the whole child — head, heart, and hands — nurturing intellectual, emotional, physical, and creative growth in equal measure.
We honour the natural stages of development, allowing children the time and space they need to grow at their own pace without pressure.
Our gardens, outdoor play spaces, and nature-based programs foster a deep relationship with the natural world and environmental stewardship.
Seasonal festivals, shared meals, and parent involvement create a warm, connected school community rooted in collaboration and care.
Music, visual arts, drama, handcraft, and eurythmy are woven into every aspect of learning — not as extras, but as essential elements of education.
Daily, weekly, and seasonal rhythms provide children with security and continuity, supporting healthy development and deep learning.

Bairnsdale is the commercial capital of East Gippsland and the gateway to the Gippsland Lakes — one of Australia's most beautiful natural landscapes. Our school is nestled in this vibrant regional town, surrounded by mountains, the Mitchell River, and close to the ocean and lakes.
This stunning natural setting deeply informs our approach to education. Children connect with the land through gardening, outdoor play, bush walks, and seasonal celebrations that reflect the rhythms of our unique East Gippsland environment.
